Why Is SEO Important Anyhow?19 May 2012

SEO can be a pretty complex thing to understand and even though I've worked online for several years, I am still constantly learning things about search engine optimization. For a long time I only used some of the more simplistic methods to help my online businesses and I only got lukewarm results. It wasn't until I really put some effort into learning how to optimize my websites and content that I started to see real success and getting people to actually read what I had written.

Everyone knows that SEO is a way to get search engines to find your website. This stuff has been around for as long as there have been search engines and the rules that they use to decide what a website is about and how important that site is when it comes to any chosen topic that you can think of.

If you think of your website as a box that is identical to every other box or website on the internet, you might be able to understand what I'm talking about. Just think of your box being blank on the outside. No writing on it whatsoever. Nobody knows what's inside of it and without a way to tell people what you're website is about it will just look like an unattractive blank cardboard box just sitting there attracting no attention from the public. What we want to do is write on the outside of the box what your website is about in the most appealing way possible when we're doing SEO work on your site. This will let everyone know, including search engines, what's inside.

There are actually two ways to tell the world what your website is about. We can write on the outside of the box, in essence, and let search engines know what's inside. This is called on site or on page SEO. The things that we can do is name your website correctly and use tags to inform search engines what the topic of your website is. In addition, we try to make sure that words associated with the topic of your site are included in the content often enough that it sends a signal to search engines about the theme of your site.

There are a ton of ways to optimize your website and once upon a time there were people that would try to game the search engines by using different tricks and methods. Of course, times change and in an effort to keep people from acting in less than ethical ways, the search engines are constantly changing the rules. In order to be really effective as on site or on page SEO there has to be a good balance between useful content for readers as well as using some of the triggers that search engines use to gauge which site has more authority on any given topic.

There are also factors external to your website that play a role in how well or poorly your site ranks in the search engine results for any given search term. This is often referred to as off page or off site SEO. The methods used to help your website include social bookmarking, article marketing and other methods that allow you to put a little advertisement of sorts on another website. These all act as little signs pointing back to your website and act as votes in an internet popularity contest with the search engines being the judge.

Again, once upon a time it was possible to game the system and trick people and search engines into believing that your site held some sort of special authority over others concerning a certain topic but without good content and natural appearing SEO, you can actually do damage to your reputation. It would be like hanging a sign that said "free beer" pointing to your website and then not have any beer at your place. You wind up with a bunch of angry people and perhaps a black eye for your trouble.

These days, SEO or search engine optimization still includes all the same signals and signs that it always has and some. Things like link velocity and freshness factors come into play thus making it more difficult to game the system falsely, while rewarding those who practice SEO by following the rules and providing good information for those looking for it.

Attract A Wider Audience And Sell More Products07 May 2012

People are spending more time than ever online, so it makes a lot of sense to turn more to internet marketing as a way to drive your business. If your business is not marketing online, you are losing out on a lot of business. Here are some smart tips that will help propel your business toward success.

Use your existing customers to get new customers. Offer some sort of referral program for your existing customers that refer their friends and family members to make a purchase from your site. You can offer things such as points to redeem, free shipping, free samples or a certain percentage off of their next order.

The next step consists in exposing as many potential customers as possible to your content. Share it with other bloggers, post it on social networks and add it to your monthly newsletter. You can also join message boards or comment on news items or other blog posts with a link to your article, if it is relevant. Get in touch with other webmasters or bloggers and ask if they would be interested in featuring your content. Do the same thing with online publications your target audience reads. When your content is featured somewhere, make sure you mention it on your site or on social network and encourage your audience to share this content themselves. This process is known as building back-links: keep in mind that building back-links is also a good SEO practice and will make your site rank higher in search results.

For instance, Facebook is the world's largest social media website with nearly one billion users. Facebook users tend to be open to intermingling with brands, but first and foremost it is a personal network. Any business entering Facebook, then, needs to avoid the hard sell, as it is very much shunned by Facebook users. Businesses also need to find the fun side of their brand to succeed on Facebook. Developing a brand page that is enjoyable and even viral can really help you cut through the clutter, and there is a lot of clutter. With that many potential customers in one spot, Facebook attracts nearly every major business. The competition is tough.

To further your customers trust in your email marketing, be aware of how often you are sending emails. If you send them daily, you may be communicating to the point of annoyance. Then, you are one quick click to losing the subscriber for good. Rather, build a calendar of touch points, and try to keep communication to no more than once per week.

A clean, simple navigation is another key to site stickiness. If visitors can't easily get to where they want to go, they will quickly surf away from your website! Beware of overwhelming navigation tricks like lists within lists. Stick to as few navigation links as you need to initially lead your visitor to take another action with your website. Also, keep your main navigation 'above the fold', meaning the visitor should not have to scroll the page to get to your important navigation links. If visitors can't initially see what you want them to do, then you are in jeopardy of losing them.

You can encourage people to visit your site or to order products online by offering limited offers. Share your coupons and discounts with the people on your mailing list or the customers who 'liked' your Facebook page for instance. Give people an extra discount if they share this information with their friends: this is a good way to get more people interested in your special offers.

Apply these tips and take the time to do some research before you reach out to more customers or add more products to your catalog. Look for quality products and original ways to market them and you will be successful.
