This is of the utmost importance because you'll never know what keywords to use if you don't know your target audience. It's very important that you research and understand your target niche as your choice of keywords will truly make or break your campaign. With this information, you can write compelling copy with all the appropriate keywords. For example, a site about Yoga would require looking into that topic in order to find keywords right for targeting. The text you have on your homepage should be enough to get you the best results with search engines. Along with your homepage, the important sections of your site should also be descriptive with a good amount of text. Search engines usually want 400-500 words of relevant text so that they can find the keyword relevance. In the beginning of the page, you must have text that contains all the main keywords, since search engines typically won't go too far down the page. That's why it's important to provide them with your keywords in the initial text.Always focus on aiming for meaty content. Don't make the common mistake of offering copy that is less than 400 words in length. The more content you write for your site, the better. If the information you give is valuable, you should aim for at least 1,000 words per page. Unless you only plan to do one campaign (not advisable) how will you know what works/what doesn't unless you measure how many extra visitors/sales you get? It's not always easy to measure how successful your viral marketing efforts are but anything is better than nothing, knowledge is power when it comes to statistics.

If a niche market is saturated, you will have a difficult time making a profit. What I suggest that you do is identify some key terms which relate to the niche. Now go to one of the major search engines, type in each term, and find out how many websites are being returned for that search. The lower the number, the better. If I use Google, and there are more than 10,000,0000 websites returned for that term, I am probably looking at a saturated niche.
Additionally, you must determine how big your niche market actually is. Take those same keywords which pertain to your market, and determine how many people are searching for them in the search engines. This can be done easily by using a program like Word Tracker or Google Keyword Tools. Of course, the more people searching, and the less websites competing for these terms, the less competitive the niche market.
Once you have identified your niche market, visit your affiliate network and search for products which pertain to that niche market. It is important to focus on one niche market at a time until you have become established in that market. Select products which you yourself could would consider purchasing. If possible, purchase and try the product out prior to promoting it. Most affiliate networks, at least for digital products, have a refund policy. If you decide not to promote the product, take advantage of this policy.
Most affiliates think that they have things figured out at this stage. They feel that now is the time to start steering traffic towards their offers and making sales. Yes, it is true that you can make sales this way, but is it the best way to go about thing? Absolutely not. There are affiliates who consider themselves successful because they are able to generate $10,000 in commission after spending $5,000 in Pay Per Click fees. After all, this is a profit of about $5,000. However, the problem with any approach which follows what I call the "Hi and Bye" model, is that it ignores the fundamentals of marketing. The fact of the matter is that the vast majority of people within your niche will be searching for free information on their related topic, not a product to spend money on. Therefore, you need to give them what they are looking for. Set up a website which offers a free report or free eBook. Allow people to provide you with their email address so that you can send them the free information. Do you see what has just happened? Not only have you provided your visitor with information, you have captured their email address. Therefore, you have the opportunity to contact and market to them in the future. This is what is known as list building.
When you are list building, you are building your customer base. Think of every business which you frequent. How many times have you walked through their doors? How many times have you ordered something from their website? Real businesses rely on repeat customers. You are doing yourself a disservice if you simply drive traffic to someone else's website. You must create your own loyal customers within your own business. Whenever you have a new product to offer, you will have the trust and attention of your customers, resulting in sales. This is how it is being done. This is how affiliate marketers are earning hundreds and even thousands of dollars daily. Of course it takes effort, patience, and consistency, however, it is something that which can take your income to levels which you never imagined achieving.
