No Hard Sells When Marketing On Facebook09 October 2011
According to traditional marketing methods, in order to sell something to someone you must be insistent and you need to do the "hard sell" to make your customer believe your product is actually worth buying. When it comes to marketing with Facebook, you can throw this type of marketing out the window. Those who use social networks don't log on to buy stuff from businesses.
When someone decides to become a fan of a business on Facebook, that person wants to establish a one-on-one relationship or correspondence with that business. He or she may eventually decide to buy something, but the main purpose of connecting with the business is to engage in dialog.
Does this mean that you shouldn't sell products directly to Facebook users? Not really, but doing nothing but hard sells each and every time you communicate with your fans may prove to be an ineffective way of marketing your brand. If hard sells are the only way you correspond with your fans they may begin ignoring your page. Some may eventually opt to remove your Facebook Page from their list of interest or unsubscribe from your page as they may feel that you are spamming their News Feeds with your hard sells.
A marketer can only perform a successful hard sell if the fans completely trust the business and brand. If you have a fairly new business represented by a virtually unknown brand, you will have a tough time convincing people to visit P.O.P. (point of purchase) pages.
When you first begin marketing your brand on Facebook, you may feel that social network marketing is more difficult than conventional online marketing because you must create engaging quality content each and every time. If you can regularly engage your fans on Facebook, your brand and business will become so popular to people that they will not even consider taking their business to another company when they need a product or service similar to yours.
Fans will respond with the utmost loyalty when they feel that they are valued by a business. The will truly become fans and will being to market your brand for you by word-of-mouth. However, when you are just getting started, you may wonder how to go about getting fans in the first place. The best way to get fans is to use your own person network of friends, family and business contacts.
Publish your Page's link on your Wall and invite your personal contacts to visit your Page and become fans. Encourage people to respond to your status updates and posts so that your contacts' contacts will also see your post on their News Feeds.
