Book Promotion Then And Now.29 April 2011
Great works of literature were produced in the Elizabethan and Victorian eras yet authors in those days wrote in dim light, using primitive writing instruments. Amazingly coherent and cohesive works were produced in large volumes. Despite this we have the pleasure of knowing writers like Charles Dickens because he found time for book promotion.
The old authors would hardly have been able to imagine a word processor, with its ability to manipulate text instantaneously. Even the ability to print out a sheet of recently written text from a laptop is a relatively recent advance. Surprisingly, however, those old authors may have found it easier to sell their work than a contemporary author does.
Although the word processor has facilitated the production and publication of texts the abundance of written and spoken material makes it difficult to sell. In addition TV, radio and other forms of communication compete vigorously with the written text for reader's attention and time.
We may know nothing of many great minds because they never needed to promote themselves, or because opportunity never came their way. As Thomas Gray observed the graves of peasants he wrote, Full many a gem of purest ray serene, the dark, unfathomed caves of ocean bear. A literary work is completed because its originator has had something to say. It follows that there is almost a duty to complete the process by promoting the work.
Television, far from being an enemy of reading, is a means of promoting it. Chat shows and online clubs are well known for the enormous publicity that they can bring. There are also focused shows where a business writer, for example, can be interviewed in the context of a financial program so getting the attention of viewers' on a channel that interests them.
Advanced technology does afford new opportunities to sell. However, tried and trusted methods can still be dressed up and used afresh. An author who appears in a store to sign a novel for a reader is a hard act to beat, and authors have been at that game for centuries. Even The president of America may appear at a signing event.
Shakespeare and Dickens understood that literature is half an art and half a craft. Their works enrich literature because they promoted themselves and their works. Amidst the welter of twenty first century publications authors may feel despondent at the prospect of self promotion. In such cases they can take comfort in the knowledge that there are professionals available online who know the intricacies of the book trade, and how to exploit new opportunities for book promotion.
