When business owners are serious about seo and maximizing the ROI from their internet site they test the profitability of new products before they invest in a seo campaign.
If the internet site has often being doing seo they may not find it too hard to rank for their new keywords related to a new service they are offering. That is another benefit about seo, after you have built up lots of back links to all the pages across your website, your website gains in PageRank and trust. This can help you target new keywords with larger ease than you would have if you were only starting with a new internet site.
To test the profitability of a new product for instance you would create a brand new page or category for it. You would write some copy, add the logos and design and then post internal links to the new release around your internet site. You can use banners advertising it, but if you have thousands of products already it may not make sense to promote this new product, unless it had enormous potential.
Next up you would conduct an Adwords campaign to drive some instant traffic to the new page. Next you would investigate your conversion and analysing stats. You would check to see how long the new visitors stayed on your page. You would see how many acquired the product or service. Then you would track and test the results again after you changed the ad copy, logos and graphics, and even changed the pricing.
You would then have a basic concept about what proportion of your traffic is purchasing your new product or service, If you can get it high enough Adwords might be profit-making to run with. You can keep using this whilst applying organic seo techniques to raise your natural SERPs listing for this new page.
If the conversion figures are high enough you may be able to launch a full scale seo campaign and still have even larger profits in front of you. If the new release wasn't a high converter based primarily on the Adwords traffic conversions, you might shelve it, put it apart for later on or just leave the fresh product on the site without applying any Adwords or seo marketing, in the hope it will gather some ancillary sales by folks reading your web pages.
